On one transmission it may be a clutch pressure switch with an internally pulled-up circuit: when the switch or wire remains open, the controller sees a high state. On another, B may be a three-wire analog sensor whose signal is near its upper electrical limit. Ford documents B as the even-clutch pressure sensor on one dual-clutch transmission. GM/Allison applications may call it pressure switch 2 inside a pressure-switch manifold. Mitsubishi examples map it to a clutch 2 pressure sensor or an integrated mechatronic assembly.

Never infer that B is the second external sensor, that high always means an open wire, or that one voltage threshold applies to every vehicle. 2How the Sensor/Switch B Monitor Works

The TCM can compare the B input with commanded gear or clutch state, requested pressure, input and output speed, fluid temperature and a calibrated timer. A switch circuit may be expected to change from high to low when hydraulic pressure closes the contacts. An analog sensor should remain within an electrical window and respond plausibly to commanded pressure. An internal switch manifold may report several hydraulic states through an assembly-specific circuit.

P0848 can describe different hardware. Confirm the architecture first, then separate an electrically high input from a true hydraulic problem.

Do not use a universal voltage or pressure threshold. A published Jeep CVT example uses an application-specific high-voltage limit; Honda switch logic, a Ford dual-clutch sensor and an Allison switch manifold behave differently. Transfer only the diagnostic principle, never the number.

3Common P0848 Symptoms

Warning lamps or messages

The MIL, transmission warning, flashing gear indicator or PRNDL can appear. Some vehicles initially show only a stored code.

Fail-safe or fixed gear

The controller may limit available gears, hold one gear, prevent an upshift or reduce torque to protect the transmission.

Harsh or delayed shifts

Shift shock, delayed engagement or abnormal timing can occur when the controller cannot trust the B pressure state.

Companion faults

Pressure, solenoid, gear-ratio, reference-voltage or communication codes can reveal which diagnostic branch should come first.

Slipping, overheating and loss of drive are possible in some applications, but they are not guaranteed by P0848 alone. Conversely, normal driving today does not prove the fault is harmless: an intermittent connector or internal switch can trigger fail-safe behavior on the next drive.

  • Failed pressure sensor or switch B. A switch may remain open/OFF, or an analog sensor can output an electrical value above its calibrated window.
  • Open signal circuit on a pulled-up switch design. The controller's internal pull-up can make an unplugged switch or broken wire appear high.
  • Signal shorted to reference voltage or power. This is a leading branch for a three-wire analog sensor.
  • Sensor ground or switch-ground problem. An open or resistant ground can drive the reported voltage high.
  • Connector or terminal damage. Fluid intrusion, water, corrosion, loose locks, backed-out pins, poor tension or a wrong repair can distort the input.
  • External or internal harness damage. Chafing, pinching, heat, an internal lead-frame problem or incorrect terminal placement may be responsible.

Real OEM examples show the range. One GM bulletin identifies a specified pressure-switch manifold condition; a Peterbilt bulletin corrects mis-pinned transmission wiring; one Mitsubishi dual-clutch procedure leads to a mechatronic assembly. None authorizes applying the same repair to another VIN.

5Can You Drive with P0848?

There is no universal safe distance. If only the MIL is on, shifts are normal, the fluid is not leaking or overheating, and no fail-safe warning is active, the shortest careful trip to diagnosis may be reasonable. Avoid towing, heavy load and high-speed driving until the fault is understood.

Stop driving and arrange a tow if the gear display flashes, the transmission is stuck in one gear, it slips, bangs into gear, will not upshift, loses forward or reverse, overheats, leaks fluid, smells burned or shows a stop-driving message. Continuing can turn a circuit or switch fault into clutch damage.

Transmission fluid and the case can cause severe burns. Set the parking brake, use wheel chocks and support the vehicle with rated equipment. Do not loosen a sensor, switch, pressure port or valve-body component while the system is hot or pressurized. A running-wheel test belongs on a suitable lift with trained personnel.

6How to Diagnose P0848 Step by Step

  1. Preserve the complete fault record

    Before clearing, scan all available modules and save current, pending, history and permanent DTCs, full suffixes, freeze frame, ECU identification and the transmission report. Record the warning and shift behavior as found.

  2. Confirm the exact transmission architecture

    Use the VIN, model year, powertrain code and transmission identification. Determine whether B is a switch, analog sensor, internal manifold, lead frame, valve-body sensor or mechatronic input.

  3. Prioritize companion codes

    Check reference-voltage, power, ground, CAN, fluid-temperature, solenoid, ratio and pressure codes. P0700 only reports that the transmission controller requested the MIL; retrieve the TCM's specific faults.

  4. Check bulletins and configuration

    Search by VIN for harness routing, terminal placement, software and assembly bulletins. Apply a bulletin only to its stated model, transmission, build range and symptoms.

  5. Inspect fluid by the OEM procedure

    Look for leakage first. Check level and condition only at the specified temperature, engine state, gear sequence and fluid type. P0848 is electrical-high, so a fluid service is not a generic fix.

  6. Inspect connectors and harnesses

7P0848 Repair Paths

An external switch or sensor can be a straightforward repair when its circuit and state are proven, but access varies. Some transmissions require fluid draining, a new seal or washer, an exact torque and a fluid-level procedure. Wiring repairs must restore terminal grip, sealing, routing and shielding. If a connector is wet with ATF, identify whether fluid is passing through the component or migrating through the harness.

An internal pressure-switch manifold, valve-body sensor, lead frame or mechatronic unit is a different repair tier. It may require pan removal, filter and fluid, cleanliness controls, programming or adaptation. A valve body, rebuild or complete transmission should never be sold from P0848 alone. Confirm independent hydraulic, ratio, clutch or mechanical evidence first.
