P2017 Code: Intake Manifold Position Sensor Circuit High (Bank 1)
The ECU is seeing max voltage from the sensor. Does this mean a short to power, or is the wire simply broken? Let's decode the electrical signal.
1. What Does P2017 Mean?
P2017 stands for "Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit High Bank 1."
Most automotive sensors operate on a 5-Volt reference scale. When the circuit is working normally, the return signal should fluctuate between 0.5V and 4.5V.
Circuit High means the ECU is seeing a solid 5 Volts (or higher). This usually happens because the ground wire is broken or the signal wire is disconnected. Inside the ECU, there is a Pull-Up Resistor that pulls the voltage up to 5V whenever the circuit opens.
⚡ High vs. Low: The Opposite Faults
Understanding the difference helps you find the break in the wire:
- P2016 (Circuit Low): Voltage is 0V. Usually a Short to Ground. Read P2016 Guide.
- P2017 (Circuit High): Voltage is 5V+. Usually an Open Circuit (Broken Wire) or Short to Power.

3. Why Is the Voltage High?
When you see P2017, think "Disconnect" or "Missing Ground":
- Unplugged Sensor: If you forgot to plug the sensor back in after a repair, the ECU sees an open circuit and defaults to "High" (5V). This is the #1 cause.
- Broken Ground Wire: The sensor needs a ground to pull the voltage down. If the ground wire breaks, the voltage floats up to 5V.
- Short to Power: Rarely, the 5V signal wire might touch a 12V power wire in the harness, spiking the voltage way beyond the limit.
4. Diagnosis: The "Jumper Test"
Since the voltage is already high, unplugging the sensor won't change anything (it will stay high). You need to test the wiring integrity.
