Fix Code P2119: Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/Performance

Is your throttle plate stuck or sluggish? P2119 usually means the valve can't snap back to its closed position. Learn how to clean it and perform the essential "Relearn" wirelessly.

1. What Does P2119 Mean?

The code P2119 stands for "Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/Performance."

While similar to other throttle codes, P2119 specifically complains about the movement of the butterfly valve. It usually means the valve failed to return to the "Closed" or "Limp Home" position quickly enough.

🐢 Limp Mode Activated

If the ECU thinks the throttle plate is getting stuck (especially if it won't close), it will immediately trigger Limp Mode to prevent the engine from racing uncontrollably.

2. The "Sticky Door" Analogy

Imagine a door with rusty, gummy hinges. You try to push it open, but it resists. When you let go, it drifts shut slowly instead of slamming.

  • The Door: Your Throttle Butterfly Valve.
  • The Rust: Carbon buildup (sludge) and oil varnish.
  • The Result: The ECU commanded the valve to close, but the sludge held it open for an extra half-second. That delay triggered P2119.

3. Why Is It Stuck?

P2119 is almost always a physical/mechanical issue rather than a wiring issue.

  • Carbon Buildup (Top Cause): Over time, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and oil vapors coat the throttle plate in a sticky black tar. When the engine is cold, this tar thickens and glues the plate shut or open.
  • Weak Return Spring: Inside the throttle body, there is a strong spring designed to snap the plate shut if power is lost. If this spring weakens or breaks, the plate "floats."
  • Ice (Winter): In freezing climates, condensation can freeze around the throttle plate, physically locking it in place until the engine warms up.

4. Diagnosis: Visual & Wireless Check

Before replacing parts, you must check for "gunk." The iCarsoft CR MAX BT (Bluetooth) helps you verify the sensor data while you are under the hood.

Step 1: Visual Inspection

  • Remove the air intake hose to expose the metal throttle plate.
  • The Finger Test: (Engine OFF!). Manually push the plate open with your finger. It should feel smooth and offer resistance. When you let go, it should SNAP shut instantly.
  • If it closes slowly or feels "gritty," you found the problem: Dirty Throttle Body.

Step 2: Wireless Graphing

  • Connect the VCI dongle. Take the 7-inch tablet to the engine bay.
  • Select Live Data > Throttle Position Command vs Throttle Position Actual.
  • Graph Mode: Push the plate with your finger again. Watch the graph. Does the "Actual" position drop to 0% instantly when you let go, or does it slope down slowly? Slow drop = Sticky.

5. The Crucial Step: "Relearn"

🔧 Don't Skip This!

Many people clean the throttle body, put it back together, and find the idle is now extremely high (2000 RPM). Why? Because the ECU "learned" to compensate for the carbon buildup. Now that it's clean, the ECU is opening the valve too much.

You MUST perform a Throttle Body Adaptation (Idle Relearn). The CR MAX BT has a dedicated function for this:

  1. Select Service Functions > ETC (Electronic Throttle Control).
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts (usually Key ON, Engine OFF).
  3. The scanner forces the ECU to learn the new "0%" (Closed) position of the clean valve.

Clean, Reset, & Go

The iCarsoft CR MAX BT is the perfect tool for fixing P2119. Use the wireless graphing to confirm sticking, and the advanced Service Functions to reset the idle after cleaning.

  • Wireless Graphing: Verify throttle plate movement.
  • Throttle Adaptation: Reset high idle after cleaning.
  • Read/Clear Codes: Exit Limp Mode instantly.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What cleaner should I use?
A: Only use Throttle Body Cleaner. Do NOT use Carb Cleaner (too harsh for sensor coatings) or Brake Cleaner (can damage plastic gears).

Q: Can I drive with P2119?
A: No. The throttle is the only way you control engine speed. If it sticks, it's dangerous. The car will likely force you into Limp Mode anyway.

Q: I replaced the Throttle Body, do I still need a Relearn?
A: Yes! A new part has slightly different tolerances than the old one. If you skip the relearn, you may get code P2119 again or have erratic idle issues.
