How to Force DPF Regeneration on Land Rover (Save $2,000)

If you own a diesel Range Rover, Discovery, or Defender (Td6, SDV6 engines), there is one dashboard message that strikes fear into your wallet:

EXHAUST FILTER FULL
VISIT DEALER

This means your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is clogged with soot. If you ignore it, the car will enter "Limp Mode" (reduced power). A dealer might charge you $300 just to force-clean it, or over $2,500 to replace the filter.

Why is My DPF Clogged?

Diesel engines produce soot. The DPF catches it. Normally, when you drive fast on the highway, the exhaust gets hot enough to burn this soot off (Passive Regeneration).

But if you only drive short distances in the city, the exhaust never gets hot enough. The soot builds up until the sensor screams "Full."

How to Perform a "Forced Regeneration"

You need to tell the car's computer to artificially heat up the exhaust to 600°C (1100°F) while parked. This burns the soot into ash.

This process creates EXTREME HEAT at the exhaust.
Park on CONCRETE or GRAVEL only.
NEVER park on dry grass or leaves. The heat can start a fire.
Do this outdoors, not in a closed garage.

Step 1: Preparation

Engine at operating temperature.
Fuel tank at least 25% full (it won't start if fuel is low).
Park safely with the handbrake on.

Step 2: Start the Process with LR V4.0

Connect the iCarsoft LR V4.0 to the OBDII port.
Select Service > DPF > Land Rover.
Choose "DPF Regeneration". You may see options for "Dynamic" (while driving) or "Static" (while parked). We recommend Static if you are already in warning mode.
Follow the on-screen prompts. The engine RPM will automatically rise (usually to 1500-2000 RPM).

Step 3: The Burn

The cycle takes about 20 to 40 minutes. You might see white smoke coming from the tailpipe and smell a "hot" burning odor. This is normal—it's the soot burning off.

Once the soot level drops to near zero, the RPM will return to idle, and the tool will display "Regeneration Successful."

CRITICAL: You Must Change the Oil After!

During a forced regeneration, the engine dumps extra fuel into the cylinders to create heat. Some of this fuel inevitably washes past the piston rings and into your oil pan, thinning out your engine oil.
