How to Reset Land Rover Service Light & Oil Life (The Easy Way)

You did the right thing. You changed your oil on time (or took it to a local shop). The engine is happy. But every time you start your Land Rover, it nags you:

SERVICE REQUIRED

or

OIL SERVICE IN 1500 MILES

Why won't it go away? Because Land Rover wants you to visit the dealership to "reset" the computer. They might charge you $50 just for this 2-minute task.

In this guide, we’ll explain why the manual "pedal trick" often fails and how to reset it properly using the iCarsoft LR V4.0.

Why the "Pedal Dance" Often Fails

You may have seen YouTube videos telling you to "Open the door, pop the hood, press the brake and gas pedal for 60 seconds."

While this works on some older models, it is unreliable on newer Land Rovers (2015+), especially the L405 Range Rover and Discovery 5. Why?

  • If the door sensor flickers, it fails.
  • If you don't press the pedals in the exact sequence, it fails.
  • It does not reset the Oil Dilution Counter on diesel engines (critical!).

The Professional Reset Method (100% Success)

Using the iCarsoft LR V4.0 guarantees a complete reset of both the dashboard light and the internal counters.

Step 1: Oil Service Reset

Go to Service > Oil Reset > Land Rover. The tool will communicate with the Instrument Cluster and the PCM. It resets the "Oil Service" message that tracks mileage.

Step 2: Inspection Service Reset

Some Land Rovers have two counters: one for Oil (distance) and one for Inspection (time/date). The manual pedal method usually only resets the Oil. The LR V4.0 can reset the Inspection Interval so you don't get nagged again in 3 months.

Critical for Diesel Owners: "Oil Dilution"

⚠️ Diesel DPF Warning: If you drive a diesel Land Rover (TdV6, SDv6, Ingenium), you MUST use a tool to reset the "Oil Dilution Factor."

Diesel engines slowly dilute their oil with fuel during DPF regeneration. The car calculates this. If you change the oil but don't reset this calculation, the car thinks the oil is still dirty. It will stop performing DPF regenerations, leading to a clogged DPF (see our DPF Guide).

The manual "pedal dance" does NOT reset the Oil Dilution factor. Only a diagnostic tool like the LR V4.0 can do this.

Troubleshooting: "Reset Failed" Message?

If you try to reset the light and the tool says "Failed," check these common blockers:

  1. Hood Latch: The car must believe the hood (bonnet) is OPEN for the reset to work on some models. If your hood sensor is broken, the reset will fail.
  2. Driver Door: Conversely, the driver's door usually needs to be CLOSED.
  3. Ignition Mode: Ensure the ignition is ON (dash lights on), but the engine is OFF.

Take Control of Your Maintenance
