iCarsoft CR Max P Review: What It Did on a Mercedes SL R230

iCarsoft CR Max P review on a Mercedes SL R230

Hands-on review Mercedes SL R230 21-minute video test Updated July 14, 2026

A 22-year-old Mercedes SL is a useful test for a modern scan tool. The R230 has enough control modules, convenience electronics and age-related history to expose the difference between a basic code reader and a full diagnostic tablet. GrooveOn connected the iCarsoft CR Max P, ran a complete scan, graphed engine data, cleared a stored entry and commanded several components from the tablet.

Short verdict: The CR Max P communicated with the Mercedes without a cable running across the cabin, returned a broad module scan, opened ECU information and live data, and completed useful bidirectional tests. Its strongest fit is a serious DIY owner or workshop that services more than one vehicle make. Coverage is still control-unit specific, and the tool does not replace electrical checks or Mercedes service information.
Review context: This article summarizes a third-party GrooveOn video. The presenter says iCarsoft contacted the channel, and the video description includes product and discount links. The hands-on actions shown are still useful evidence, but this was not an anonymous retail purchase.

The demonstration lasts 21 minutes and 25 seconds. The useful diagnostic portion starts after the unboxing, with the scanner in the Mercedes cabin and the wireless VCI plugged into the vehicle.

Hardware and setup on the R230

The CR Max P arrives in a fitted hard case with the tablet, wireless VCI and accessories arranged in separate spaces. That matters for a shop tool: the adapter is small enough to disappear into a drawer, and a damaged diagnostic connector can stop the day's work.

The tablet uses a 10-inch 1280 x 800 display, 64 GB of storage and a 10,000 mAh battery. The current U.S. listing covers 58 vehicle makes and supports CAN-FD and DoIP alongside older protocols. Those numbers describe the platform; they do not guarantee that every function is present on every ECU.

Wireless scanning changes where you can work

The reviewer hangs the tablet on the steering wheel while the VCI stays in the OBD port. With no diagnostic lead between them, he can move around the car for light, washer and trunk tests. The same benefit becomes more obvious in the companion R230 roof test, where the tablet can sit in the trunk next to the roof mechanism.

The wireless VCI lets the tablet remain in view without an OBD cable crossing the cabin.

What the full-system scan found

After vehicle identification, the CR Max P opens the Mercedes diagnostic structure and scans the available control units. The result is the kind of overview a generic engine-code reader cannot provide: powertrain, body, chassis and convenience modules appear in one report, with a fault count beside the affected systems.

The auto scan summarizes responding Mercedes control modules and stored entries.

The session displays several stored entries, including P207F and P2092 references discussed by the presenter, a K57 relay entry and a CAN communication event. A displayed code is the start of diagnosis, not a parts order. Mercedes-specific definitions, current status, freeze-frame or event data, wiring diagrams and physical measurements determine what the entry actually means on this car.

Scan function shown What it gives the technician What still needs checking
Automatic full-system scan A quick inventory of responding modules and stored faults Whether an entry is current, historic or caused by low voltage
Control-unit information Supplier, hardware and software identification visible in the ECU Correct calibration, supersessions and service campaign history
Read and clear faults A way to record codes and retest after repair Root-cause diagnosis before clearing or replacing parts
Battery-voltage display A quick check of diagnostic-session voltage A proper battery and charging-system load test when needed

Live data, graphs and code clearing

Inside an engine module, the reviewer selects live values for engine speed and smooth running. He then switches the selected values to graph view. A graph is more useful than a changing number when you are looking for a brief dropout, a value that reacts late, or a difference between cylinders or sensors.

The test also opens module-identification pages with Bosch and software details. That information can help confirm which controller is fitted before looking up a wiring diagram or repair procedure.

When the presenter clears the K57 relay entry, it disappears from the module. Clearing a history code can help separate an old event from a repeatable fault, but save the original scan first. If the code returns, diagnose the circuit under the conditions that trigger it.

The bidirectional tests that worked

Bidirectional control is the clearest step up from read-only scanning. The tablet sends a command to a control unit, and the technician watches or listens for the component's response. The Mercedes session includes:

  • Central locking operation
  • Instrument-cluster gauge needle sweep
  • Seat headrest movement
  • Low-beam and fog-light activation
  • Headlight-washer and windshield-washer operation
  • Trunk-lid release

The reviewer walks around the car while the wireless tablet commands an exterior component.

An active test helps divide a circuit into smaller questions. If the module commands a lamp and the lamp responds, the output circuit and component can operate at that moment. If nothing happens, the result narrows the next checks, but it does not by itself identify a failed module, relay, wire, ground or component.

The trunk-lid command is a simple visual confirmation of bidirectional communication.
Use active tests carefully. Keep people, tools and clothing clear of windows, seats, locks, wipers, pumps, roof parts and other moving components. Support battery voltage when the vehicle procedure calls for it, and follow the factory service sequence.

What about the Mercedes R230 Vario roof?

The broad review proves that the tool can run active tests in several R230 modules. It does not show roof actuation. GrooveOn followed up two days later with a focused look at the retractable-hardtop control unit.

In that follow-up, CR Max P reaches the RVC roll-bar/Vario-roof module, reads faults and displays six groups of live data, including pump temperature, vehicle-speed conditions, window signals and detailed roof limit-switch states. The demonstrated module menu does not include an active-test option. That distinction is important: useful roof diagnosis is available, but the tool did not command the roof mechanism in that session.

Service functions, updates and ownership cost

The video's service menu shows more than 50 reset and maintenance categories. The current iCarsoft U.S. page describes 49+ service functions. Menu counts can shift with software versions and the way related functions are grouped. The useful question is whether the exact function works on the exact model, year and ECU in front of you.

The current product page lists lifetime free software updates over Wi-Fi and no annual subscription. At the time of writing, the U.S. price is $599.99. Price and availability can change. For a multi-brand shop, avoiding a recurring update bill is a meaningful cost difference. For an owner with one car and one simple fault, it may be more tool than the job requires.

Need Basic OBD2 reader CR Max P
Generic engine and emissions codes Usually Yes
Mercedes body, chassis and convenience modules Usually no Shown in this test
Multi-value live data and graphs Limited or model dependent Shown in this test
Bidirectional component commands No Shown in several R230 modules

Who should consider the CR Max P?

Good fit

  • Independent workshops servicing several makes
  • Serious DIY owners maintaining a Mercedes plus other vehicles
  • Buyers who need full-system scanning and active tests, not only engine codes
  • Users who prefer a wireless VCI and a large standalone tablet
  • Owners who value lifetime updates without an annual subscription

Probably more than you need

  • You only check generic check-engine-light codes
  • You work on one vehicle and need a single maintenance reset
  • You expect programming, coding or every factory actuation on every ECU
  • You want the tool to choose parts without electrical or mechanical testing

Final verdict

The Mercedes test shows a competent diagnostic workflow rather than a feature-list slideshow. CR Max P finds modules across the car, opens controller information, graphs live values, clears a stored entry and proves several outputs through active tests. Wireless operation is genuinely useful once the job moves away from the driver's seat.

Its limits are equally clear. Coverage changes by vehicle and module, code descriptions need service-information confirmation, and a supported module may offer live data without active control. The R230 roof follow-up is a good example.

Bottom line: CR Max P makes sense for multi-brand, full-system work where a basic reader stops too early. Check your required vehicle function before purchase, save pre-scan records and use the tablet as part of a measured diagnostic process.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iCarsoft CR Max P work with a Mercedes SL R230?

The video shows it identifying and scanning an early R230, reading ECU information, displaying live data, clearing a stored entry and running active tests. Confirm coverage for your exact year, engine, options and required function.

Which bidirectional tests worked on the Mercedes SL?

The session includes central locking, a gauge sweep, seat headrest movement, exterior lights, washers and trunk release. Other modules may expose different tests.

Can it graph Mercedes live data?

Yes. Engine speed and smooth-running values are shown in graph view. Interpreting a graph still requires expected-value information and physical testing.

Can it clear fault codes?

Yes, in supported modules. Record the original scan first. A recurring code needs diagnosis rather than repeated clearing.

Are updates free?

The current U.S. listing states lifetime free Wi-Fi updates with no annual subscription. Check the current product page for the terms in effect when you buy.

Can it diagnose the R230 Vario roof?

The companion video shows roof-module fault reading and detailed live microswitch data. It does not show a roof active-test menu on that car.

Is it a replacement for Mercedes Xentry?

No. CR Max P provides broad aftermarket diagnostic and service coverage, but factory tooling and factory procedures may be required for programming, guided tests or model-specific work.
