How to Fix Spongy Brakes: Land Rover ABS Bleeding Guide (DIY) - iCarsoft Official Store

There is a sinking feeling every mechanic knows: You’ve just finished upgrading your brake lines or replacing a leaky caliper. You jump in the driver’s seat, press the brake pedal, and... it goes straight to the floor.

You pump it. You bleed it again. You waste another bottle of brake fluid. But the pedal is still "spongy."

The problem isn't your technique; it's the ABS Modulator. On modern Land Rovers, once air enters the complex valves of the Anti-Lock Brake System, no amount of foot-pumping will get it out. You need a computer to force those valves open.

This is where the ABS Bleeding function on your iCarsoft LR V4.0 becomes a lifesaver.

The "Power Flush" for Your Brakes

Why Traditional Bleeding Fails

The ABS pump is a maze of tiny solenoids and reservoirs. When you do a standard "pump and hold" bleed, the fluid bypasses these trapped pockets of air. The air stays there, compressing like a spring every time you brake, causing that dangerous soft pedal feel.

The iCarsoft LR V4.0 cycles the pump motor and rapidly opens/closes the valves, literally vibrating the air bubbles out into the lines so they can be flushed away.

Step-by-Step: The ABS Auto Bleed Procedure

⚠️ Important Safety Note: Brake fluid eats paint. Protect your fenders. Also, keep an eye on the reservoir level constantly—if it runs dry, you have to start all over again!
Step 1: Preparation
  • Jack up the car and remove the wheels (easier access to bleeder screws).
  • Have a helper ready at the wheel, or use a catch bottle.
  • Fill the brake fluid reservoir to the MAX line with the correct spec fluid (usually DOT 4, check your cap).
Step 2: Connect and Select

Plug in the LR V4.0. Turn Ignition ON (Engine OFF). Navigate to Service > ABS Bleeding > Land Rover.

Follow the on-screen instructions. It will usually tell you which wheel to start with (e.g., "Rear Right").

Step 3: The "Noisy" Part

The tool will instruct you to open the bleeder screw and then press "OK" on the screen.

Don't panic: You will hear loud buzzing, clicking, and pumping noises from the engine bay. The pedal (if you were pressing it) would kick back violently. This is the ABS pump cycling. It pushes old fluid and air bubbles out into your catch bottle.

Step 4: Close and Repeat

Once the cycle finishes (usually a few seconds), the tool will tell you to close the bleeder screw.

Repeat this process for all four wheels as directed by the scanner. Usually, the order is: Rear Right -> Rear Left -> Front Right -> Front Left.

Post-Bleed Checklist

Once the electronic bleed is done, the pedal should feel rock solid. Take the car for a careful test drive.

If you also replaced brake pads, don't forget to check our EPB Service Mode Guide to ensure your parking brake is calibrated correctly.

Safety Can't Be Compromised

Brakes are the one system you cannot afford to get wrong. Whether you are fixing a soft pedal or doing a 2-year maintenance flush, the iCarsoft LR V4.0 ensures the job is done to factory safety standards.
