Depending on design, the monitored device may be a two-state pressure switch or a variable pressure sensor. A low result can be a shorted signal, failed sensor, reference/ground problem, connector contamination or a switch state that does not agree with steering load.

P0552 is mainly relevant to vehicles whose hydraulic steering load is reported to the engine controller. Many newer vehicles use electric power steering without a hydraulic pressure sensor, so a steering complaint on an EPS vehicle may belong to a chassis-module code instead. Never add a sensor simply because a generic code description mentions one.

Circuit low is not pressure low. Actual assist pressure can be normal while the electrical input is stuck low. Conversely, a leaking hose or weak pump can make steering heavy without causing P0552. Electrical and hydraulic evidence must be separated.

5Can You Drive with P0552?

If steering effort is normal, the MIL is steady, no fluid is leaking and the engine does not stumble during turns, a short careful trip for diagnosis may be reasonable. Leave extra space for low-speed maneuvers and avoid holding the wheel against full lock.

Stop and tow for suddenly heavy steering, repeated stalling during turns, a rapidly falling reservoir, fluid spraying near the exhaust, smoke, a damaged drive belt, pump seizure noise or a steering warning that changes vehicle control. These conditions are not explained safely by the circuit code alone.

Hydraulic steering fluid may be hot and under high pressure. Never search for a pinhole leak with a bare hand, loosen a pressure switch with the system running, or work near a moving belt. Follow the OEM depressurization and bleeding procedure.

6How to Diagnose P0552

  1. Save the complete fault record

    Record current, pending and history codes, freeze frame, idle speed, battery voltage and the steering condition when the fault occurred.

  2. Confirm system architecture

    Use the VIN and diagrams to confirm hydraulic, electro-hydraulic or EPS design and whether the PCM monitors a switch or analog sensor.

  3. Check companion codes first

    Reference-voltage, charging, idle-control, communication or steering-module codes can expose a shared cause.

  4. Inspect fluid, belt and leaks safely

    Check the specified fluid level and type, belt condition, hose routing and visible leaks with the engine off and the system cooled as directed.

  5. Inspect the electrical connector

    Look for steering fluid inside the plug, corrosion, terminal spread, broken locks, chafing, road debris and previous repairs.

  6. Observe supported live data

    Graph the PSP switch state or sensor PID with engine speed and commanded idle during a safe steering-load change. Do not hold full lock.

  7. Test the correct circuit

    Use the OEM pinout and a high-impedance meter. For an analog sensor, verify reference, signal and ground; for a switch, verify the specified state without forcing voltage into the PCM.

  8. Separate electrical and hydraulic proof

    If the signal is correct but steering is heavy or noisy, move to the OEM fluid-flow and pressure procedure. A scan PID is not an independent pressure measurement.

  9. Consider the controller last

    Only after the device, circuit, power, grounds, hydraulic system and relevant bulletins pass should the PCM input or calibration be considered.

  10. Repair, bleed and verify

    Use the specified fluid and bleed procedure, clear ordinary codes, repeat a safe load check and confirm no current or pending P0552.

7P0552 Repair Paths

Repair a corroded connector, ground, reference or signal wire when testing proves it. Replace a switch or sensor only when its electrical state fails the application-specific procedure or fluid has breached the component. Some switches thread into a pressurized line and require a new seal, exact torque and fluid bleed.

Low fluid requires leak repair, not repeated topping off. A hose, pump or rack is justified only by independent leak, flow, noise, pressure or mechanical evidence. The circuit code alone does not authorize a pump, steering gear or PCM.

The correct repair restores both signals and behavior. The pressure input must respond as specified, the idle must remain stable during safe steering load, and any separate hydraulic complaint must also be resolved.
