The dream: A luxurious, capable used Range Rover or Discovery for a fraction of its original price.
The nightmare: A dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree a week after you buy it, followed by a $5,000 repair bill.
Land Rovers are incredible machines, but buying a used one without knowing its history is gambling. A seller might hide warning lights or clear codes just before you arrive.
Don't buy blind. In this ultimate guide, we will show you how to perform your own dealer-level Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) using the iCarsoft LR V4.0. It’s the best insurance policy you’ll ever buy.

A professional mechanic charges $200-$400 for a PPI. With the right tool, you can do 90% of that work yourself in 20 minutes.
The LR V4.0 doesn't just read "Check Engine" lights. It dives into over 30 hidden modules—Air Suspension, Transmission, Body Control, Diesel systems—to reveal the car's true secrets.

The Ultimate Buyer's Secret Weapon
Compact, powerful, and touchscreen-easy. Don't view a car without it.
Phase 1: The "Cold Start" Check (Before Plugging In)
Before you even connect the diagnostic tool, pop the hood. Ask the seller not to warm up the car before you arrive.
- Listen to the start: Does the engine rattle fiercely for 2-3 seconds? (Could be timing chain tensioners on V8s).
- Watch the exhaust: Blue smoke? Burning oil. Heavy white smoke (sweet smell)? Coolant leak/head gasket. Excessive black smoke (diesel)? Injector or turbo issues.
- Check the dash: Turn the ignition ON but don't start. Do all warning lights (Check Engine, ABS, Airbag) illuminate? Unscrupulous sellers sometimes put black tape over bulbs to hide faults!
Phase 2: The Deep Scan (Where the Truth Hides)
Now, connect your iCarsoft LR V4.0. Turn ignition ON (engine off).
Go to Diagnostics > Land Rover > Automatic Selection > Auto Scan.
Let it run completely to query every single module in the car. You will get a list showing "Pass" or "Fault".
Crucial Codes to Look For (The Deal-Breakers):
If you see codes in these areas, walk away or negotiate heavily:
- Engine/Transmission: Any permanent codes related to timing, low oil pressure, or gear ratio errors.
- Air Suspension (C-Codes): Codes for "Gallery Pressure Low" or "Compressor Overheat" mean expensive repairs are imminent. (Learn more in our Air Suspension Guide).
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): Codes like P2463 (Soot Accumulation High). If it's too high, it may need replacement, not just regeneration. (See our DPF Guide).
If it says "0 miles" or a very low number, the seller just erased the codes to hide something before you arrived. Be extremely suspicious.
Phase 3: Live Data Interrogation (Seeing Invisible Problems)
Codes only tell you what already broke. Live Data tells you what is about to break. Start the engine and go to "View Data".
1. The Battery Health Check
Look at the Voltage. With the engine running, it should be 13.8V - 14.5V (alternator working). Turn the engine off and wait 5 mins. If voltage drops below 12.2V rapidly, you need a new battery immediately.
(Don't forget to register new batteries! See our BMS Guide).
2. Air Suspension Health
Select the Suspension module data. Look for "Gallery Pressure". Start the engine. The compressor should run, and this pressure should climb steadily to around 14-17 bar (around 200-250 psi) and hold it. If it struggles to reach pressure or drops quickly, there's a leak or a weak compressor.
3. Diesel Injector Balance (For TDV6/SDV6)
Look for "Injector Balance" or "Smooth Running" values for each cylinder while idling warm. They should all be close to 0 (e.g., between -0.8 and +0.8). If one cylinder is way off (e.g., +2.5), that injector is failing. (Learn about Injector Coding here).
Phase 4: The Test Drive & Final Scan
Take the car for a good 15-minute drive. Get it up to highway speed. Use the brakes firmly. Find some bumps to test the suspension.
After the test drive, don't turn the engine off yet. Run another "Auto Scan" with the engine running. Some faults only trigger after driving cycles. If new codes appear now, you just saved yourself a headache.
The Best Investment You'll Make
